Since its launch in 2003, the ELLE DECORATION INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS or EDIDA celebrate the best in design and can be compared to the Oscars given in the film industry.

25 chief editors from Elle Decoration’s worldwide country editions, select their winners in 14 categories. Later the main global winners will be selected and celebrated in a huge event during Milan’s Salone each year.

A recent highlight project by Gala was the collaboration with Moroso for an Africa inspired furniture collection and illustrations. The collection was presented last year at the SALONE DEL MOBILE 2019, under the title ‘M’ AFRIQUE’.

The glass vessels and vases featured below are available via MARION FRIEDMANN gallery. They are from the project ‘OUT OF THE CAGE’, realised with the skilled glass-blowers of acclaimed glass manufacturer NOUVEL Studio in México City. The liquid glass is blown into various shaped and sized birdcages (or other everyday objects from the markets and streets of the city), serving as ‘natural’ molds for this process. Once the housings for colourful birds, the cages have transcended into objects, containers, vases or vessels, new life has literally been blown into them. The objects are a result of the interaction of the hot fluid glass with the moulds. The colour and crystal quality of the glass by Nouvel studio is remarkable and highly rated, as are the skills of its glass-blowers. The project questions the status of confinement versus refuge. A cage can be conceived as imprisonment or a cosy shelter for comfort. The glass works subtly capture this essence of limitation, protection and custody in an imaginative fashion.
