On board Souvenir Plates

This is a set of 6 souvenir plates, humorously referring to the souvenir plates that were so popular to collect from various picturesque holiday destinations. Now in our airmilem fuelled lives and travel logbooks, and danger that might lie within, the souvenir plates will be collected on the planes, rather than in villages. Prolific graphic designer Uzyel Karp, Mexico, draws these stories onto 6 different plates.

Set of six plates

This is a set of 6 souvenir plates, humorously referring to the plates that were so popular to collect from various picturesque holiday destinations. Now we might collect our plates on planes rather than in villages, due to our busy flight travel diaries, and the fear and danger that might lie within. Prolific graphic designer Uzyel Karp, Mexico, draws new stories for our air-mile fuelled travel lives.

The souvenir plates, porcelain held by a wire to the wall, were for a long time the testimony of those audacious who sought to let us know of the routes travelled and the experiences spent. Unlike the Chinese porcelain that the silk route delivered only to the noble homes, the decorative plates made visible the accessibility of travelling through the celebration of a specific place. The Aboard Collection is a tribute to these trips, to the collective space in which the fragility of the experience unites us under the instructions of the risk that we all face while flying and that we have forgotten, more than once to check.
